Crashing Chairs, 2012

Rodrigo Marti

Working between sculpture, performance and drawing, Rodrigo Marti’s practice questions modes of political efficacy in contemporary art and culture production. His focus on communality and forms of shared ecstasy has led to thematic streams such as insurgent barricade, the intersection of education and activism, and spatial politics via unsanctioned structures/activities and festivals. He received his MFA in Public Practice from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, CA.

During his residency, Rodrigo Marti sourced refuse materials from other units in the light industrial park surrounding Katz’s Deli. He then created an installation in which the back wall mirrored the ceiling while angling outwards, as if in the process of turning in on itself. This thrusting motion was halted by his sculpture, Potential Barricade.
